SPECIALTY CLINICS
CANCER AND
ONCOLOGY REHABILITATION
Our service at women in focus is for any women who have been recently diagnosed with cancer, currently undergoing or have completed their cancer treatment.
Cancer survivorship is increasing faster than ever due to improved diagnosis and treatments, however research is revealing that women are often left with other conditions that impact their quality of life.
This may include:
Shoulder neck and back pain
Restricted shoulder strength and function
Postural changes and breathing restriction
General weakness and deconditioning
Pelvic floor disorders including painful intercourse and incontinence
Treatment
Specialised Physiotherapy can help to significantly reduce the severity and time course of these symptoms and improve a Womens quality of life.
We provide specialised care in a supportive and compassionate environment. Our services include:
Shoulder neck and trunk manual therapy for restriction and pain
Skin care management and education
Treatment of axillary web syndrome/cording
Lymphoedema early detection and management (See Lymphoedema)
Use of MLS laser for the treatment of scar and soft tissue healing, breast oedema, Lymphoedema and radiation dermatitis and fibrosis
Graduated exercise specifically for cancer survivors based on the validated Strength ABC program as a part of our Oncology Rehabilitation program.
Pelvic floor management for issues frequently experienced with breast and gynaecological cancers
Oncology Rehab program
Being physically active during and after treatment for breast cancer and other female related cancers has been associated with a range of benefits including:
Improved fitness and function
Improved body composition
Improved immune function
Reductions in stress, depression and anxiety
Reduction in the number and severity of treatment related side effects such as nausea, fatigue and pain all of which contribute to improvements in quality of life
There is also emerging evidence linking active lifestyles with improved survival.
At Women in Focus we offer our specific Cancer Fighters exercise programs based on the validated Strength ABC program developed as part of the PAL (Physical Activity and Lymphoedema) Trial in the USA.
This trial demonstrated that in a population of women at risk of Lymphoedema following breast cancer an appropriate exercise program reduced the likelihood of developing Lymphoedema by 70% and in those women who had not already been diagnosed with Lymphoedema it reduced their flare ups by 50%.
